How the Hourly to Salary Calculator works

Whether you are comparing a job offer quoted hourly against one quoted as a salary, planning a move from part-time to full-time, or trying to understand what a raise really means, you need one comparable number. This calculator converts in both directions: choose hourly pay or annual salary as your starting point, enter your usual weekly hours and paid weeks, and it shows the equivalent annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly, daily and hourly amounts at once.

The two extra inputs are where most conversions go wrong. Hours per week matters because a salaried position with 50-hour weeks pays a lower effective hourly rate than the same salary at 40 hours. Paid weeks per year matters if you do not get paid time off: a contractor who takes two unpaid weeks should enter 50, not 52, to avoid overstating income by about 4%.

All results are gross, meaning before taxes and deductions. To estimate take-home pay, apply your own tax situation or use the figure as an input for the Budget Calculator, which asks for after-tax monthly income. If you are weighing a job that is further away, remember that commuting time and cost effectively reduce the real hourly rate, too.

When comparing offers, also consider the things that do not appear in either number: health insurance, retirement matching, bonus potential, paid leave and flexibility. A slightly lower salary with a generous employer retirement match can be worth more over time than a higher one with none, as our retirement guides explain.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert hourly pay to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work per week and the paid weeks per year. At $25 an hour, 40 hours and 52 weeks, that is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 per year before taxes.

How do you convert a salary to an hourly wage?

Divide the annual salary by the total hours worked in a year (hours per week × paid weeks). A $52,000 salary at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks equals $25 per hour. If you regularly work more than 40 hours, your effective hourly rate is lower.

Are these amounts before or after tax?

Before. These are gross figures. Your take-home pay will be lower after federal, state and payroll taxes, and any benefit or retirement deductions.

Why is the biweekly figure annual ÷ 26?

There are 26 two-week pay periods in a year, so a biweekly paycheck is one twenty-sixth of annual pay. A semi-monthly paycheck (24 per year) is slightly larger per check than a biweekly one, but the annual total is the same.
